Travis County Jail Mugshots Overview
The research did not verify that the current TCSO public inmate roster displays mugshots. The official TCSO Find an Inmate page was marked expired, and the legacy SIPS inmate search redirected to it. Because of that, no Travis County page should promise that a county jail roster profile contains a current booking photo, housing unit, charge list, or bond field unless a live result is verified later. TCSO's own disclaimer says public data is provided for convenience, accuracy is not warranted, and users should verify information before relying on it.
An official local booking-photo source does exist for Austin Police Department records. APD operates a booking photo search that is useful when Austin Police made the arrest or when the booking photo is routed through APD's posted system. It is not a complete Travis County jail roster and should not be treated as a full county custody search. A person arrested by another agency may still be booked through Central Booking, yet the photo access route may be TCSO records rather than APD's public photo tool.
Where to Find Travis County Booking Photos
Use official sources in a narrow order. First check TCSO only if the inmate page is functional. Next, if the arrest involved Austin Police, check APD's official photo search. If the photo is missing, older, or tied to a record not shown online, use TCSO's Texas Public Information Act request path and provide enough identifying detail for staff to locate the record. Do not use commercial mugshot-publishing or pay-to-remove sites as proof of custody, charges, or case status.
- Check the TCSO Find an Inmate page only if the official form is working.
- If Austin Police made the arrest, search the APD booking-photo system.
- For a missing county booking photo, file a TCSO open-records request with full name, date of birth if known, arrest date, booking number if known, arresting agency, and the exact record sought.
- For formal charges or case status, search Odyssey and clerk records instead of relying on a photo result.
- For state prison, federal custody, or ICE detention, use the correct locator and do not expect a county mugshot gallery.
The Austin Police Department booking photo search is the official city photo source identified in the research.
Its value is limited to APD booking-photo access and should not be mistaken for a complete Travis County inmate roster.
Travis County Booking Photo Fields
The APD photo search field inventory was captured at a high level without copying personal identifiers. Public entries can include a booking image, person name, booking or arrest date, charge text, and agency or context. TCSO profile fields were not verified because the county inmate page was expired. For that reason, the photo field in a Travis County inmate profile must be described as not confirmed unless the official TCSO page later returns a live public result.
| Field | What the Research Supports |
|---|---|
| Booking photo | APD photo search may show a booking image; TCSO roster photo status was not verified. |
| Name | APD entries may identify the person; county roster name output was not verified. |
| Booking or arrest date | APD entries may include date context; court records should confirm case timing. |
| Charges | APD photo entries may show charge text, but formal charges should be checked in Odyssey or clerk records. |
| Agency context | APD system is city-specific and does not cover every Travis County jail booking. |
Are Travis County Mugshots Public Record?
Texas does not have one simple rule that every Travis County jail mugshot must be posted online. Access is controlled mainly through the Texas Public Information Act, Government Code Chapter 552, along with law-enforcement exceptions and confidentiality laws. A booking photo held by a government agency may be requested as public information, but release can be affected by an active investigation, juvenile confidentiality, sensitive images, court orders, or other mandatory exceptions. The practical result is that online access and request-based access are different things.
Key Statutes:
Texas Government Code Chapter 552 is the Texas Public Information Act and controls requests to government agencies unless an exception applies.
Texas Government Code 552.108 can affect law-enforcement records tied to active criminal investigations.
Texas Government Code 552.1085 makes sensitive crime-scene images confidential, which matters when a photo request is not a routine booking photo.
Texas Family Code Chapter 58 protects juvenile justice information and can limit release of juvenile-related records.
Request a Travis County Booking Photo
When a Travis County booking photo is not online, use the TCSO open-records process. The sheriff's open-records page cites the Texas Public Information Act and gives in-person and mail channels. Requests can be made in person at TCSO, 5555 Airport Blvd., Austin, TX 78751, or mailed to Travis County Sheriff's Office, Attn: Paralegal, 5555 Airport Blvd., Austin, TX 78751. The open-records contact number in the research is 512-854-9718. For older confinement history, TCSO's incarceration-records request page says records are available from May 1988 to present, with pickup Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, excluding Travis County holidays.
The TCSO open-records request page is the correct route when a booking photo or arrest-related record is not available online.
A clear request should name the person, date of birth if known, arrest date, arresting agency, booking number if known, and the exact photo or booking record sought.
What Is Public and What Is Not
Public access does not mean every image is online or that every image must be released. A routine adult booking photo may be easier to request than an investigative photo, juvenile photo, sealed record, or sensitive crime-scene image. Court-file photos or evidence photos are different from booking photos. Discovery records, active investigative files, and protected juvenile records can be withheld or limited even when some custody information is public.
What is and is not public: APD photos and some adult booking records may be public, but TCSO roster photos were not verified and restricted records require official agency review.
Mugshot Removal and Expunction
For official Travis County records, the records-clearing route is through court orders, not commercial removal services. Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55 governs expunction for qualifying arrests and cases. If a record is expunged, sealed, or otherwise restricted by court order, the person should use the certified court order with the agency that holds the record. A dismissed case does not automatically erase every booking image from every source without the correct legal process.
Commercial mugshot sites are not official sources and should not be used to confirm custody, bond, charges, or disposition. They may be stale, incomplete, or copied from older public postings. Formal case outcomes, including dismissal, conviction, sealing, or expunction, should be checked through Travis County court records after arrest, clerk records, and any court order entered in the case.
State and Federal Booking Photos
TDCJ, BOP, and ICE records are separate from Travis County jail mugshots. The TDCJ inmate locator is for sentenced state prisoners and may show state custody information, not a Travis County booking-photo gallery. BOP and U.S. Marshals systems generally do not operate public mugshot galleries. ICE ODLS identifies immigration detainees through biographical or A-number search, but it is not a mugshot search. A federal or immigration custody result should be verified through the correct agency rather than through a local county photo expectation.
| System | Photo Expectation | Correct Search |
|---|---|---|
| Travis County jail | TCSO roster photo not verified; request records if needed. | TCSO Find an Inmate, jail phone, open records. |
| Austin Police | Official city booking-photo search located. | APD booking photo search. |
| TDCJ | State sentenced-prisoner system, not county mugshots. | TDCJ inmate locator. |
| BOP / ICE | No public federal or ICE mugshot gallery for Travis County custody. | BOP or ICE ODLS. |
